Sir Henry Edwards Bart. (1812-1886), Pyenest House, Halifax, by whom given to his sister Dalia Edwards (later Mrs C.K. Clarke).

Catalogue Note

Three autograph versions of this composition are known, the prime version being the one in the Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection, Madrid. The present picture is closest to the version in the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen, Munich although there are some slight differences (see F. Baldassari, Carlo Dolci, Turin 1995, pp. 137-141, cat. no. 111-113, reproduced cat. ill. 111-113).
