Follower of Bartholomäus Spranger

The portrait was added later - an x-ray reveals a shield in the stone niche where the portrait now sits.  The portrait itself bears a resemblance to Spranger's portrait of his wife Christina, listed as in a private collection, Preßburg (see H. Berthold Beitz, Prag um 1600, Freren 1988, p. 187, reproduced plate 9).  The present portrait may have been painted after the engraving by Aegidus Sadeler the Younger (Wurzbach 159) which, in turn, was made after Spranger's Self portrait with an allegory of the death of the artist's wife Christina (ibid, pp. 158-9, cat. no. 158, reproduced plate 158).
