Catalogue Note

At the time of the 2005 exhibition (see Exhibited below) Dr. Bernhard Schnackenburg and Mr. Fred G. Meijer, based on transparencies, confirmed the attribution to Ostade.  Both Dr. Schnackenburg and Mr. Meijer believe the date of 1638 to be too early for the work.  Dr. Schnackenburg added that while the subject matter of this painting can be grouped with Ostade's outdoor scenes from the years before 1640, the execution appears to be a bit later, about 1650.  Mr. Meijer suggested a date in the early 1640s.
