Condition

Canvas is laid down on panel. The paint surface is under a dirty and uneven varnish. The detail and coloration are nicely retained in the figures. There is some sinking in the darker pigments in the background. Overall, the painting presents a decorative image. Ultra violet light reveals a few small spots of retouching in the sky at upper left. It is difficult to judge if there are any other, older retouches as nothing is visible under the old varnish. The painting's appearance would benefit from sensitive cleaning and a change of varnish.
