Catalogue Note

Agostino Marti was active in Lucca from about 1503 to 1543, and appears to have been a pupil of Michelangelo di Pietro Membrini (the former so-called "Master of the Lathrop Tondo"), with whom he appears to have collaborated early in his career.  An independent master by 1509, Marti began to receive commissions immediately and was able to start his own bottega soon after, taking as a pupil Zacchia the Elder, among others.  His early style reflects an awareness of Fra Bartolmmeo, whose works in Lucca continued to exert potent influence in that city.  The present panel, however, would appear to date to after 1520, when Marti began to turn to more Michelangelesque models for inspiration.

Marco Tanzi was the first to suggest the attributionof this Saint Sebastian to Marti at the time of the exhibition in Mantua (see Exhibited below).
