Catalogue Note
The composition of this painting is based on Rubens' design for one of the tapestries in his celebrated Eucharist Series (see N. De Poorter, Corpus Rubenianum, The Eucharist Series, Part II, vol. II, fig. 199), the modello for which is now in Madrid, Prado. The tapestry cycle was commissioned by the Archduchess Isabella Clara Eugenia for the convent of the Descalzas Reales in Madrid.
