Catalogue Note

The muted, silvery tonality of this painting dates it most likely to the 1630s, a period when Ruysdael, together with Jan van Goyen, developed the so-called "tonal" style of landscape painting.  Both artists, whose works are extremely close during this period, used a subtle palette of greys, greens, yellows, blues and browns to depict the local landscape, creating a harmonious effect.  In its composition and coloration, the present painting is comparable to other works by the artist from the early 1630s such as two examples in the National Gallery, London:  the River Landscape with A Bridge, dated 1631, and A River Scene, dated 1632.
