Catalogue Note
This painting was formerly given to Lotto by Berenson, Venturi, and Fiocco. At the time of the 1999 sale (see Provenance below) the attribution to Belliniano was proposed by Mauro Lucco. Lucco compared this picture to a Portrait of a Man in the Lazzaroni collection in Rome (exhibited, Brescia, La pittura bresciana del Rinascimento, 1939,no. 163). Lucco also suggested a date of circa 1526 by comparison with Belliniano's signed and dated altarpiece in the Scuolo Grandi di San Marco in Venice (reproduced B. Berenson, Italian Pictures of the Renaissance: Venetian School, London 1957, vol. I, figs. 615-6).
