Catalogue Note
The sitter, Count Otto Heinrich von Schwarzenberg, was a popular figure in the court of Bavaria under both Duke Albecht V and Wilhelm V. He was made governor of Baden from 1571-1575 by Duke Albrecht V and from 1681 he chaired the sessions of the Privy Councilor.
Hans von Aachen is known to have painted a larger portrait of Schwarzenberg sometime before 1590, three quarter length and seated at a desk, but the portrait is now lost and known only from an engraving by Sadeler. Schwarzenberg certainly enjoyed having his portrait made, commissioning Tobias Stimmer to make a woodcut of him in 1574 and another engraving by Sadeler of 1580 portrays him in an allegorical frame.
