After Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn

This painting is a seventeenth century copy after Rembrandt's signed and dated 1632 self-portrait, in a private collection (see E. van de Wetering et al., Rembrandt by Himself, London and The Hague 1999, pp. 148-9, cat. no. 34).  The original was altered by a later unknown 17th century hand, approximately in the 1670s, mainly in the hat and coat area.  The present work copies the original after the alterations to the hat and, therefore, can be dated to the last quarter of the 17th century.
