We are grateful to Prof. Enrique Valdivieso who, on the basis of photographs, has suggested the present attribution.  He compares this painting to another composition of the Good Shepherd by Valdes Leal in a private collection, Madrid (see E. Valdivieso, Valdes Leal, Madrid 1991, p. 188-9) and notes that these types of compositions were produced for private devotional purposes.
