The present painting is an autograph version of a painting formerly at Hagley Hall, Worcestershire (see W. G. Constable, Richard Wilson, London 1953, pp. 202-203, cat. no. 82a). That picture was recorded in the Catalogue of Pictures at Hagley Hall, 1900, no. 102 as representing part of the Villa Madama, near Rome.
