Catalogue Note
This painting is a reduced version of the large canvas (231 by 349 cm.) formerly in the collection of the Duke of Arenberg, Brussels (for an old photograph, see M. Rooses, Jacob Jordaens, His Life and Work, London 1908, p. 58). Rooses mentions that Jordaens treated the subject more than once and lists a picture of the same subject, but of smaller dimensions, that was in an Amsterdam sale on June 5th, 1765 and in the sale of the widow of Robert Geelhand in Antwerp, 1888 (op. cit. p. 49).
We are grateful to Dr. Hans Vlieghe for confirming this painting to be a late work by Jordaens and Studio, on the basis on photographs.
