bidding is closed
Description
- Lorenzo Lippi
- Portrait of a lady as Saint Margaret, possibly Margherita Galli
- oil on canvas
Provenance
Possibly Agnolo Galli, Palazzo Galli, Via Pandolofini, Florence.
Catalogue Note
The sitter is possibly identifiable with one of the daughters of Agnolo Galli, who were depicted in Lippi's Triumph of David, dating from 1656, published by D'Afflitto as in a private collection, Florence (see C. D'Afflitto, Lorenzo Lippi, Florence 2002, pp. 297-298, cat. no. 123, reproduced). The present picture formed part of a series of five or six pictures commissioned by Agnolo Galli circa 1656, depicting his daughters in the guise of Saints and may be compared to the Saint Elisabeth of Hungary (of the same dimensions) which is listed by D'Afflitto as with Giancarlo Baroni, Paris (ibid, p. 299, cat. no. 124, reproduced).
We are grateful to Dottoressa Chiara d'Afflitto for confirming the attribution on the basis of photographs.
