Catalogue Note

This painting was formerly thought to be by the Amsterdam painter Dirck Dircksz. van Santvoort (1610-1680), perhaps due to a mis-reading of the signature. It is a late work by De Bray, comparable to the Expulsion of Hagar of 1662 sold in these Rooms, 25 June 1969, lot 60. The dramatic use of chiaroscuro suggests that De Bray must have seen the earlier work of Rembrandt in Amsterdam.
