Catalogue Note

Ertz (see Literature) considers the figures to have been painted by Jan Brueghel the Elder and dates the painting to the second decade of the 17th century. As he remarks, the design goes back to De Momper's famous landscapes of the seasons painted in the first decade of the century. The high viewpoint and very low horizon line are unusual for De Momper, and foreshadow his stylistic development in the 1620s.
