Catalogue Note

This still life belongs to a distinctive group of around 35 to 40 signed works by Jacob van Hulsdonck, depicting fruit in a ceramic bowl or wicker basket (around five of which also include a small vase of flowers). Although very few of Hulsdonck's still lifes are dated, these works seem to belong to the artist's maturity, by which time the influence of Osias Beert, so evident in his early work, is no longer so apparent.

The overall composition can be compared closely to a still life by Hulsdonck that was with the Brod Gallery, London in 1960 (see E. Greindl, Les Peintres Flamands de Nature Morte au XVIIe Siecle, Sterrebeek 1983, p. 365, cat. no. 50, reproduced p. 254, figure 138), which also shares in common the same table type and a porcelain bowl with almost identical markings.
