Général Count de Miollis, by whom acquired in Rome whilst Governor (according to an old label on the reverse).

Catalogue Note

Général Sextius Alexandre François, Count de Miollis (1759-1828) led Napoleon’s occupying army into Rome on the 2nd February 1808. He was Governor for his first term from 1808-9, and for the second term from 1811-1814.  At the beginning of his second term he acquired the Villa Aldobrandini as his residence.

The painting has a traditional attribution to Giovanni Lanfranco (1582-1647).
