Catalogue Note
While it is unknown whether Siberechts actually visited Italy, the strong Italian influence in the present painting can in any case be put down to a knowledge of the Dutch Italianate paintings that he would have seen in Antwerp. The present work can be dated prior to Siberecht's journey to England in 1673 when his style reflected both his Flemish roots and the fashion for warmly lit landscapes in the Italian tradition.
