Catalogue Note
The present lot may be compared to Sellaer's work of the same subject of 1544 in Madrid, Prado (inv. no. 2207). Both paintings reveal the influence of Sellaer's journey to Brescia in 1522-24 where he is thought to have worked with Moretto, although his work seems to owe a greater debt to the Milanese followers of Leonardo. The subject was clearly a favourite of the artist; other examples were sold in these Rooms 14 February 1968, lot 89 and 17 April 1996, lot 17.
