Catalogue Note
There are two other known autograph versions of the composition, the prime version being the Galleria degli Uffizi, Florence, the other being in the North Carolina Museum of Art, Raleigh (see K. Langedijk, The Portraits of the Medici 15th-18th Centuries, Florence 1981, pp. 605-607, cat. nos. 37 &39, reproduced plates 29,37 & 29,39). The present picture is closest in style to the Uffizi version, although there are some minor differences.
