Catalogue Note
We are grateful to Dr. Francesco Petrucci for endorsing the attribution to Gaulli on the basis of photographs. The same figure of the putto recurs in the lower right hand corner of Gaulli's larger Baccanale in a private collection in Sao Paolo, Brazil (reproduced in the exhibition catalogue, Giovan Battista Gaulli, il Baciccio, Palazzo Chigi, Ariccia, 1999-2000, p. 189, fig. 1)and again with slight variations in his Worship of the Golden Calf sold in these Rooms, 17 November 1982, lot 49. Dr. Petrucci believes this to be a late work by the artist, painted around 1690
