Catalogue Note
The Fishwife here is almost certainly that listed by Hofstede de Groot1 as one of a pair of paintings, both signed and dated 1725, formerly in the Baker collection in Leyden until their sale in August 1775. The pair remained togther in the van Roothaan collection in Amsterdam and later the Chaplin collection in England after 1840, and remained so in the Perkins and Keppel sales in London in June 1890 and June 1911 respectively. They are last recorded with the Amsterdam dealer J. Goedhaert in 1912. As the differing dates would suggest, the present pair were clearly formed after this date but before the London sale of 1959.
