Many of the figures in this composition are derived from Hieronymous Cock's reproductive engraving after Pieter Bruegel the Elder and published by Pieter van der Heyden in 1563 under the title La Cuisine Grasse, together with its pendant La Cuisine Maigre (`The lean kitchen') (for which see R. van Bastelaer, Les estampes de Peter bruegel l'Ancien, Brussels 1908, plates 154 and 159).
