Catalogue Note
This Dune Landscape was long thought to be an early work by Philips Wouwerman. C. Hofstede de Groot was however one of the first to express his doubts, when he remarked: Hübsches frühes Bild - wenn es nicht eher ein guter Pieter Wouwerman ist (see Literature). It has recently been studied by Birgit Schumacher, who thinks that although probably painted within his circle, it is not by the artist himself. She compares the composition with other works by Wouwerman painted in the second half of the 1640s, which are influenced in theme and composition by the paintings of Pieter van Laer. See for example the Inn on the Beach shore, Hermitage, St. Petersburg, which can be dated around 1647/8 (see B. Schumacher, Philips Wouwerman (1619-1668). The Horse Painter of the Golden Age, Doornspijk 2006, p. 363/4, no. A490, reproduced, vol. II, fig. 428).
