Catalogue Note
Little is known of the artist G.W. Berckhout, whose work is closely connected to that of the Van der Croos family from Alkmaar. While the Van der Croos family moved to The Hague, and concentrated mainly on subjects in the surroundings of that city., Berckhout seems to have stayed in Alkmaar, repeatedly painting the abbey and castle of Egmond nearby.
