Catalogue Note

In the Royal Academy of Arts catalogue of 1886, as well as in the Sedelmeyer and Kann catalogues of 1898 and 1907 (see under Exhibited ), this painting was recorded as dated 1645. A date for the present work around this time seems plausible, comparing it  to other works, such as The kitchen interior, signed and dated 1644, in the Mauritshuis, The Hague (inv. no. 260) and the Cardplayers, datable 1644/5,  in a private collection (see M. Klinge and D. Lüdke, David Teniers der Jüngere 1610-1690. Alltag und Vernügen in Flandern, Heidelberg 2005, pp. 164/5, cat. no. 36, reproduced).
