Catalogue Note
The present painting is very similar in composition to a painting with a Couple cutting tabacco, sold London, Sotheby's, 10 December 2001, lot 431, now in a private Belgian collection. Furthermore, the sitters are also very similar to those in The studio of a painter and The Marriage contract (see under Literature, p. 162, nr. A45 and p. 165, nr. A46). De Clippel dates the mentioned paintings around 1640, consequently, the present painting can be dated to the early 1640s.
