Catalogue Note

Although the Leiden born Matthijs Naiveu was a pupil of Gerard Dou (1613-1675), this picture does not show the detailed style, nor subject matter, associated with Dou and the Leiden Fine painters. Naiveu's paintings of later date are more coarse in style, and show a more colourful palette. They also depict a new subject matter of street scenes with a strong narrative character, all of which this work is a good example. (See E.J. Sluiter (ed.),  Leidse Fijnschilders, Van Gerrit Dou tot Frans van Mieris de Jonge 1630-1760, exhibition catalogue, Zwolle/Leiden 1988, pp. 186-95).
