Catalogue Note

According to Robinson (see Literature below, p. 268), the signature on the reverse is the normal one of the Van de Velde the Younger from about 1678 to his death in 1707. However, the picture has been at some time cleaned and would be unrecognisable as a work connected with Van de Velde if it were not for the signature on the back. Being a Dutch scene, it may have been painted before 1672, when the Van de Veldes left The Netherlands to settle in England; the signature could then have been added later. Robinson gives as a possible explanation that the picture was used as a decoration for a sea chest and became damaged, but was authenicated later by Van de Velde.
