Catalogue Note
According to Professor Dr Werner Sumowski this composition follows a drawing in black chalk by Ferdinand Bol in the Kupferstichkabinett, Berlin (see W. Sumowski, Drawings of the Rembrandt School, vol. I, New York 1979, p. 230, no. 103, reproduced p. 231). The Berlin drawing was supposedly a preliminary study for a painting attributed to Bol, datable to the 1640s, in the Hermitage, St. Petersburg (see A. Blankert, Ferdinand Bol (1616-1680) Rembrandt's Pupil, Doornspijk 1982, p. 176, no. R 127).
