- a portrait of Phillip Jansz. Dou (1609-1668) at the age of 54, standing half-length, wearing a black coat with a white collar and black cap, holding a letter in his right hand
- inscribed with the age of the sitter and dated upper right: AE (in ligature) tatis.54/ 1663 and inscribed on the letter: ... / S...(eigneur?) Ph(i)lyp Dou / (possibly:) passementier(?) / In / port / Leijden.
- oil on canvas, in a carved and gilt wood frame
Catalogue Note
Phillip Jansz. Dou (Leiden 1609-1668), was the son of Jan Pietersz. Dou (1572/3-1635) who was a surveyor. Phillip was passement maker in Leiden and was married to Margriet Jacobsdochter. A passementier finished garments in mostly gold or silver by delicately decorating the borders of clothing and upholstery.
The style and execution may be compared to that of a signed Portrait of Andries van der Horn, burgomaster of Haarlem, dated 1662, by De Bray which was recorded with P. de Boer, Amsterdam (see J.W. von Moltke, 'Jan de Bray', in: Jahrbuch Preussische Kunstsammlungen, 1938, p. 471, no. 47, reproduced fig. 8).
