Catalogue Note

Gerrit Toorenburgh studied under the well known Haarlem painter Jan ten Compe (1713-1761) and became member of the Haarlem St. Luke Guild in 1764. Not only working in his teacher’s style, he mastered himself in the style of Jan van der Heyden (1637-1712), which is shown through comparison with lot 64 in this sale.
