Catalogue Note

This exquisite album depicts the affluent country houses and gardens along the river Vecht. Stoopendaal drew the houses and gardens from nature, mostly seen from across the river, closely recording the individual characteristics of the architecture and layout of the gardens with meticulous precision. The series evokes the splendidly imposing houses and formal gardens of the Dutch Golden Age. Two editions of the series were published in 1719, of which the present work is from the first. A further later edition was published in 1791.
