Catalogue Note
The Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris holds the preparatory drawing for this subject (Washington cat. fig. 20-10). The drawing (only surviving example of a preliminary study for his printed works) reveals the care and effort Campagnola took in creating the fluidity and spontaneity so present in his engravings. It is probable that The Descent of the Holy Spirit (Hind 1) was engraved on the reverse of this copper plate a year later in 1518.
