Etching with drypoint and engraving, 1647, a very fine impression of the second (final) state, printed with burr on the cloak and balustrade, with particular contrast, on paper with a Basilisk watermark (Ash-Fletcher p. 79 Aa), with margins, pen and ink inscription in brown ink verso, showing through in lower margin recto, a small thin area at centre of upper edge of image (visible verso), some foxmarks and light overall discoloration, other minor defects, otherwise in good condition
Provenance
Ex coll. John Malcolm (L. 1780), and a duplicate from the British Museum (L. 305)
Catalogue Note
The barely legible inscription, verso, gives the name of the sitter and a reference no 258 which probably relates to the accompanying initials DD or Daniel Daulby, author of A Descriptive Catalogue of the Works of Rembrandt, (Liverpool, 1796).
