Catalogue Note

This is an early work by the artist, which can be dated circa 1720-25. The colored washes are unusual, but at the time of the 1987 sale George Knox pointed out the similar technique in a drawing in Frankfurt (see T. Pignatti, Tiepolo: Disegni, 1974, pl. VIII).  The drawing comes from the collection of Eduard Sack, who wrote a monograph on Giambattista and Giandomenico Tiepolo, published in Hamburg in 1910.
