Catalogue Note

According to legend, St. Anthony went to the seaside to preach to the fish when the people of Rimini would no longer listen to him. At least four other drawings of the subject by Giandomenico are known, two formerly on the art market and two in Stuttgart (see James Byam Shaw, The Drawings of Domenico Tiepolo, London 1962, p. 75, no. 16, reproduced, and George Knox, Tiepolo, Drawings...from the Graphisches Sammlung Staatsgalerie Stuttgart..., 1971, nos 21 and 39, reproduced). The present sheet can be dated circa 1755-60.
