Catalogue Note

The attribution was proposed by Nicholas Turner, who pointed out the compositional links with a painting of the same subject now in a private collection in Bologna (see Prisco Bagni, Benedetto Gennari, Padua 1986, no. 32, reproduced).  The painting is dated to 1674-75, the period in which Gennari left Paris for England.  Bagni writes of the painting: 'Il dipinto pur essendo di chiara impronta guercinesca, risente di una certa raffinatezza probabilmente derivata dalle sue esperienze in Francia'.  Stylistically, the present work fits well with Gennari's known drawings.
