* Baldassare Franceschini, called Il Volterrano
Volterra 1611 - 1689 Florence
VOLTERRA 1611 - 1689 FLORENCE
RECTO: STUDIES OF A FEMALE FIGURE VERSO: SEVERAL STUDIES OF MALE FIGURES

Provenance

Sale, London, Sotheby's, 3 July 1980, lot 63;
purchased at that sale by John and Alice Steiner

Catalogue Note

This drawing came from the large group of Volterrano drawings sold at Sotheby's, London in 1980, catalogued by Charles McCorquodale. The recto may be a study for a St. Catherine. The figure of the old man and a baby on the verso could be related to a Simeon with the Infant Christ mentioned by Baldinucci (V, 1847, p. 175). The drawing is a fairly late work.
