Catalogue Note

Passeri seems to have planned at least three paintings of this subject. Two drawings in Düsseldorf relate to one, another in Dayton to a second (see D. Graf, Master Drawings by Giuseppe Passeri in the Kunstmuseum, Düsseldorf, Düsseldorf 1995, cat. nos. 477-9 and fig. 261). This sketch is for a third painting, which was presumably intended for a space above a door or altar. There is no record of such a commission but the style of the drawing, according to Dieter Graf, would suggest a date of circa 1690.
