Catalogue Note

This sensitive study has traditionally been associated with the head of the Madonna in Reni's 1627 painting The Virgin adoring the sleeping Christ Child, in the Galleria Doria Pamphili, Rome, although there are some differences in the angle of her head (see D.S. Pepper, op. cit, 1984, cat. no. 115, pl. 141).  The drawing may in fact be more closely related to a slightly different version of the composition by Reni in the Maximilian Speck von Sternburg Stiftung, Leipzig (see D.S. Pepper, 'Guido Reni's Practice of Repeating Compositions', Artibus et Historiae, vol. XX, no. 39, 1999, p. 47, fig. 25).  A preparatory drawing for the Virgin's hands is in the Brera, Milan (see V. Birke, op.cit., cat. no. 114).
