Catalogue Note

In style, format and dimensions, this charming drawing is extremely similar to the Landscape with Men Bowling, which Ann Sutherland Harris attributed to Annibale Carracci (see The Katalan Collection of Italian Drawings, exhibition catalogue, Poughkeepsie, New York, Vassar College Art Gallery, 1995, no. 34).  On this basis, various scholars also attribute the present drawing to Annibale, suggesting that both sheets originate from the same sketchbook. The attribution of landscape drawings by the Carracci and their circle is, however, a highly complex area, and some experts still prefer the present drawing's traditional attribution to Domenichino, one of Annibale's most successful followers in landscape painting and drawing.
