Catalogue Note

The attribution to Dietterlin was suggested to the former owner by Marcel Roethlisberger, in a letter of 5 October 2001. Dietterlin's works have often been confused with those of his teacher Johann Wilhelm Baur, but signed works are known which help to identify his hand. Several are dated 1638, they are often in pairs and generally of the same size as the present work (see, for example, those sold, New York, Sotheby's, 13 January 1988, lots 104, 105). For further information on the artist, see Johann Wilhelm Baur, exhibition catalogue, Strasbourg, Palais Rohan, 1998, pp. 70-74, 128.
