Catalogue Note
Franco was in Urbino from 1545-51, employed by Duke Guidobaldo II to supply designs for his majolica factory at Castel Durante. Another drawing by Franco with a classical subject, Mucius Scaevola, has been connected with a dish now in the Herzog Anton Ulrich-Museum, Braunschweig (see sale, New York, Christie's, 28 Janaury 1999, lot 34).
