This drawing may have been part of a series depicting episodes from the Passion, possibly made as designs for painted glass panels. A signed drawing of The Crucifixion, extremely similar to this in style and dimensions and probably from the same series, was sold, Amsterdam Sotheby's, 21 November 1989, lot 1.  A substantial proportion of the relatively few drawings known drawings by Van Noort are studies for glass panels or roundels, and the artist also designed some of the famous series of windows produced for the Sint Janskerk, Gouda, from 1551 onwards.
