Catalogue Note

Despite the old attribution, this drawings seems very much more Swiss than Italian in character, and is similar in handling to some of Holbein's more carefully drawn figure studies, such as the depictions of St. Paul and St. Thomas (sold, London, Sotheby's, 11 July 2001, lot 31, and New York, Sotheby's, 23 January 2001, lot 12, respectively).
