Catalogue Note

Corot was in Rome from December 1826 until March 1827. The view from the Farnese Gardens was popular with many French artists and there are three oil sketches of it by Corot himself, one in the Phillips Collection, Washington, D.C., and two in the Louvre.
The present work will be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonné of Corot drawings, being prepared by Martin Dieterle and Jill Newhouse.
