Catalogue Note

Traviès regularly exhibited watercolors of animals and birds at the Paris Salon, and indeed this drawing was presented at his first exhibition, in 1831.  This was his only watercolor entirely devoted to butterflies, and shows not only native species, but also more exotic varities.  In 1854 Traviès published a comparable print, representing the butterflies of Brazil and Cayenne (Paris, Bibliothèque nationale de France, département des estampes, inv. no. AA3).
