Catalogue Note

This drawing is preparatory for the frontispiece of the album of engravings Vestigia delle Terme di Tito e Loro interne pitture, which was published in Rome in 1776, at the initiative of the antiquarian Lodovico Mirri.  Franciscus Smuglewicz, who founded the chair of drawing and painting at the University of Vilnius, made drawings for all the album's illustrations, which were then engraved by Marco Carloni.  The engravings illustrated the frescoes and stucchi of Nero's Domus Aurea, which had been discovered near the Baths of Titus in the late 15th Century.  The remainder of Smuglewicz's drawings for the project are in the Louvre, inv. no. NII 33784.
